The 12km Skyline Walk runs along the ridge between Old Coach Road in Johnsonville and Makara Saddle above Karori Park. The walk takes you up and over Mount Kaukau which offers one of our favourite views of Wellington!
You can start at either end or jump up from different points (we started at Johnsonville Park) but if you're wanting to do the whole walk you'll probably need to leave a car at either end as we did.
The walk can take up to 5hours according to WCC information but we managed to do it easily in 3 1/2 hours including breaks.
Dogs should be onlead as the track runs through an operating farm and there are sheep and cattle at various parts along the walk.
The track offers great rural, city and coastal views and on a good day you can see over to the South Island. It can be somewhat exposed along the ridge so we'd recommend not going on a windy day and there are some inclines so be ready to climb.
Make sure you bring plenty of water, comfortable shoes and a jacket in case it's windy on the ridge. Also make sure to follow the yellow directional markers along the track!
